Outdoor Learning at SNES

Outdoor learning continues to be a large focus at the school, despite the shift to cooler weather. All students enjoy the extra time outside and the hot chocolate breaks help to warm up!

Mrs. Bonikowsky's class recently went on a mural tour of downtown after listening to an outdoor rendition of “Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighbourhood”. They then walked down Baker Street in search of some murals and art that make Nelson beautiful. The kids were amazing detectives and found so many murals
and painted utility boxes!

Hello families,

Welcome to a new week! I hope you had a good long weekend with your family and observed Remembrance Day in a way that is meaningful to you. Here are a few notes for this upcoming week.

If You're Not from Nelson....

Mrs. Bonikowsky's class has been learning about the provinces of Canada and what makes each of them special. To celebrate our own hometown of Nelson, students created their own book based on the book "If You're Not from the Prairies" in which the author highlights all the wonderful geographical elements of growing up in the prairies. Students were able to identify aspects of our own local environment that are important to them and that they'd like to share with others. Find a few sample pages of their book below. Great work, Gr. 2/3's!

Remembrance Day Assembly

Big thanks to our Gr. 4/5 students for hosting our Remembrance Day Assembly on Nov. 10. It was a beautiful time that honoured those who have gone before us to fight for peace around the world. We were joined by special guests, Mr. Gaschnitz (Past President of the Nelson Legion), and Sailor 3rd Class (S3) Madison Storey (Canadian Navy, Material Management Technician, CFB Esquimalt). Students presented renditions of "In Flanders Fields"  and the poem, "Indian Veterans" to honour Indigenous Veterans. They also played the ukulele and sang "Imagine" to conclude our time.

Peace Train rolls through our Gr. 4/5 class

Our Gr. 4/5 students planned and presented our Remembrance Day assembly. As part of their learning, they read the "Peace Train" and wrote about ways we can bring about peace in our own lives and communities. They recognize that they hold peace in their hands and can be agents of change each and every day. See here what some of them have to say!

Poppies Abound at SNES!

Poppies abound at South Nelson! Several classes have been learning about the meaning of the poppy and how it represents remembrance. There are many beautiful displays of these cheerful flowers throughout the school. It was wonderful to see so many students giving a donation and wearing a poppy on Remembrance Day.

Halloween Fun for Gr. 2/3

Our grade 2-3 classroom at South Nelson is buzzing with excitement as we settle into the rhythm of learning. While our weekly forest visits are a beloved tradition, recent safety concerns regarding grizzly bears have temporarily kept us indoors. Nevertheless, our young learners are fully engaged in their studies. They diligently tackle their daily 5 reading and writing activities, and math is a daily adventure in problem-solving.
