Hello Families,

We are in the last home stretch towards the end of the year. Lots of things are happening! Be sure to keep up with schedules and information from your child(ren)’s teacher.

See below for this week’s update

Highlights from last week include:

  • Swimming  Our Gr. 2-6 students have been going swimming for the past few weeks. Many thanks to PAC for their generous subsidy for this opportunity! Students have enjoyed swimming being part of their PE programming this month.
  • HUB Learn to Ride –  Our Gr. 3-6 students participated in a learn to ride clinic last week during which time they learned about bike safety and riding. Huge thanks to Kootenay Mountain biking who came with a team, a trailer of bikes, and led our students in two days of great learning.
  • Library visit – Gr. ½ students are learning about the community and enjoyed going down to the library last week. They learned about how to find books and the great programs the local library offers families and students.
  • Wildsight at Slocan Pools – Mrs. DeSousa’s Gr. 4/5/6 class participated in some great outdoor learning at Slocan Pools. A Wildsight facilitator lead them through various activities and learning experiences.
  • Outdoor Learning -Many classes are continuing their outdoor learning with this beautiful weather!
  • Classroom learning – continues in full force! There is still much to learn! Students are wrapping up writing projects, math units, art endeavours and passion projects.

A few pieces of information/reminders for you:

  1. Dressing for the weather – A reminder that as the weather warms up classes will be outdoors more. Please ensure your child comes prepared for the warm weather including a hat, water bottle and sunscreen in their backpack.

Family learning resources:

June is Indigenous History Month. See below for some resources from our Indigenous success teacher.

Language:

  • First Voices: This is a fantastic website that explores the Indigenous languages of Turtle Island. Simply type in a language or Nation, and you'll be guided to a "word of the day." A helpful suggestion when engaging with the language: listen to the word several times, then try saying it aloud before reading or viewing its written form. The site also offers songs, stories, and games to further enrich your learning experience.

Land:

  •  Native Land: Another excellent website for exploring Indigenous lands and territories. It offers a global perspective, encouraging students to think about Indigenous presence and sovereignty beyond national borders. The site clearly illustrates how territories overlap and highlights how international borders were established long after Indigenous Nations were already present on the land.
  • Journalling - My Place, My Connections: This is a great resource, especially for the 2025/2026 academic year! This My Place, My Collections “Book of Lists” can also be used to fulfill learning outcomes/aims across the curriculum.

Physical Education:

Additionally, here are the resources put together by our SD8 AbEd team and published today!
