Weekly Update - 28Jan23

Good day out there, South Nelson Community.

Thank you to Mrs. De Sousa for her contribution for this month's Superintendent's Report. This includes the beautiful passage below and the collaborative art piece and demonstrates the many important shared values that are embedded in South Nelson.  

Returning to school after winter break brings the reconnection of students and their classroom community. This January Mrs. De Sousa’s Grade ⅘ class showed what community truly is. With the passing of a peers’ family member they bridged learning from the Restorative Action program, the Circle of Courage and the Seven Sacred Teachings; sharing with one another what it meant to powerfully feel to the core. One student said, about the class group,” I am so glad to be in this family”, in a class discussion about how to lift someone up, walk beside them on their journey, and know when to sit in silence. We are grateful. We all belong.

Also included below is a photo from Mrs. Chernenkoff's class yesterday after I stopped by yesterday and had students proudly showing the scenes they were diligently creating for their stories.  This is a great example of 'story workshop' that many classrooms are working with regularly.

I would like to thank the South Nelson community for being so welcoming, supportive, and committed through the past few years as we have overcome many obstacles and worked & played together to create a kind, inclusive, fun, and musical (to borrow words sent to me from a parent this week) learning environment for kids and adults!
