SNES News Nov. 25

Hello families,

Welcome to a new week! We are quickly heading into the holiday season with four weeks left of school. November has been a steady month of focused learning and students are making great progress. In the next few weeks we will turn the corner to more holiday focused events.

Be sure to mark your calendar for our Winter Concert on Thursday. Dec. 12 at 1:30pm. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Some highlights from last couple of weeks include:

  • Emma Rush  – We had the privilege of hosting Emma Rush, a classical guitarist for a concert. Emma Rush is one of Canada’s top classical guitarists and has played all over Canada and throughout the world. We are grateful for the support from the Selkirk Concert Society for sponsoring this concert
  • History of Nelson Studies – Mrs. Bonikowsky’s class is studying the history of Nelson. They started their unit with a fun and informative trip to the Nelson museum
  • Outdoor Learning and story workshop – Our outdoor learning this week also included a story workshop where classes worked with natural materials to create a scene, characters and a plot for a story
  • Opinion writing – Our intermediate students have been working on how to share their opinions (in a positive and constructive way!) They have been constructing writing pieces that state their opinion and supporting facts.
  • Science projects – The Gr. 4/5 classes have been studying biomes and were completing their poster projects this week. They know so many interesting facts about different environments around the world!
  • Outdoor sledding – With the new snow last week, students were able to get out on the hill – even for just a little while – to enjoy sledding. With the inconsistent weather the hill will be open only when there is enough snow. Students are welcome to bring their own sleds, but they need to be clearly labelled with their names and left outside the door. We look forward to more sledding to come!

A few reminders for you:

  1. Student outerwear –Winter is here to stay! Please make sure that your child is coming prepared for the weather, whatever may come, during the day. It can be quite unpredictable, and often our classes go outside for significant parts of the day for outdoor learning. Students should have warm jackets, rain jackets, water proof shoes, etc.. Always better to be overprepared than not!

Some upcoming dates (you can also find these posted on our calendar: https://southnelson.sd8.bc.ca/events/calendar)

  1. Dec. 6 – Learning Updates released in MyEdBC
  2. Dec. 9-12 – Guessing Jar fundraiser
  3. Dec. 12 – Winter Concert and celebration 1:30pm
  4. Dec. 13 – PJ day
  5. Dec. 17 – Santa’s Workshop

Finally, some family learning!

Here are some resources to help you support the learning at home this week:

As many of you head outdoors for winter activities, here are some activities to be mindful of our environment and observant and reflective. These can even be done in your own backyard or from a favourite window:

Sit spots: https://wildsight.ca/education-resources/sit-spots/ - These are great to do all year long and watch your favourite spot change throughout the seasons!

Nature Journals: https://wildsight.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Nature-Journals.pdf - Another great way to preserve your observations for a beautiful keepsake.

That’s it for now.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Snell
