Hello Families,

Well, we are well on our way towards the last day of school! It is hard to believe this school year is almost over. There are so many fun learning experiences in these upcoming weeks, as well as wonderful celebrations of learning and community.

See below for this week’s update.

Have a great week!

Last week’s highlights include:

  • Jump Rope for Heart – Huge thanks to Mrs. Lehnert and the Gr. 6 team at Trafalgar for organizing this event. We raised $1900 towards heart research! See here for a full blog on the event.
  • Outdoor field trips – We had several field trips go out last week. Students visited the Creston Wildlife centre, Kokanee Creek, went swimming and visited the Chamber of Mines. As well as regular outdoor excursions to the local parks and forests.
  • Family Fun Night – What a fun event! Our PAC hosted a wonderful family gathering filled with games, crafts, food and fun. There was even pie throwing at the Principal and Mrs. C who is retiring. It was all in good fun and a great way to end the year. Huge thanks to all our volunteers for making it happen.
  • Small Change for Big Changes – Our Gr. ½ class piloted this fundraiser to raise money for the local Nelson Search and Rescue. They raised almost $250 dollars by collecting nickels, dimes and quarters. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

A few pieces of information/reminders for you:

  1. Dressing appropriately – There are so many field trips going out. As always, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather and are prepared for the activities of the day.
  2. Extra snacks – With all the activities outdoors and in the community, students are using a lot of energy! Many students are asking for extra snacks throughout the day and have often eaten their lunch by recess. Consider sending along extra food to help fuel your child’s day!
  3. Bus Registration – The deadline has been extended. If you need your child to ride the bus next year, please register at this link: https://www.sd8.bc.ca/node/36719

Family learning resources:

June is Indigenous History Month. Our students will be participating in the Walk for Truth and Reconciliation this week by doing a walking tour on the rail trail. It will be a guided walk outlining 9 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It is set up for this week from the parking lot at Mountain Station heading towards the cemetery. Feel free to do the walk as a family and discuss some of the steps you can take towards reconciliation.

Here is a document you may find useful: "Spirit Bear's guide to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action"

Have a great week!
