SNES News Feb. 24

Hello Families,
Welcome to a new week!
See below for this week’s update.
Last week’s highlights include:
- Whitewater ski days – These continue! Students are gaining some good skills and being successful on the hill. This week will be the last week of skiing.
- 100 Day Celebrations – Our primary wing celebrated 100 days of school last week! They celebrated with mixed up stations and various activities related to the number 100.
- Akeelah and the Bee – Mrs. Sparks’ class went to the Shoebox theatre to view “Akeelah and the Bee” in recognition of Black History Month. Some good conversations were sparked as a result of the viewing.
- Viola Desmond -Mrs. Bonikowsky’s class extended their learning about Black history month as well by engaging in a research project about Viola Desmond and black people’s rights in Canada.
- Play in the K – We welcomed next year’s K’s to the Kindergarten room for another Play in the K. There are still a few upcoming! Spread the word to anyone you know who is going into K in September.
- Preparation for Cardboard arcade – Our intermediate students are starting their science studies on simple machines and are beginning to plan for the upcoming cardboard arcade
- Kindness survey – Our student leadership group conducted a kindness survey in our school as part of the upcoming Pink Shirt Day. We want to know student perceptions about kindness in our school so we can plan pro-active strategies around anti-bullying
- Mutiplication/Division – Our intermediate classes are all deep in their studies about multiplication and division. From Gr. 3-6, students are learning the various strategies and applications.
- Canadian Explorers – Mrs. Bonikowsky’s class is studying Canadian explorers. This week they had some fun activities pretending to be explorers as they engaged in a scavenger hunt for food, water, gold, spices, etc around the school. They enjoyed the teamwork and competition!

February 26 is Pink Shirt Day. Here are some resources for you as you have conversations with your children about the topic of bullying, anti-bullying, and how to stand up against bullying. Encourage your child to wear pink on this day.

Here is a website with a collection of various activities you could choose to do at home to talk about bullying with your child(ren). There are downloadables, videos, and art activities.
Here is a link to ERASE BC which also has a wealth of information on bullying, how to prevent it and how to report it.
Have a great week,
