Hello families!

Welcome to December! With the recent dusting of snow, we are reminded that winter is here to stay and we are heading quickly towards the holidays. Learning Updates were released on Friday and there will be many exciting activities happening in the classrooms during these next few weeks. Be sure to keep up with all the goings on in your child’s classroom!

Here are some highlights from the last couple weeks:

  • Bannock – Our Indigenous students had the opportunity to learn how to make Bannock! They spent time with our Indigenous success teacher and learned the process from scratch. They then delivered fresh Bannock to all our classes for a special treat.  There were many happy smiles as they ate their yummy Bannock!
  • Winter Concert preparation – Classes have been working hard to get their songs performance ready. Everyone is looking forward to sharing their learning in an afternoon of music!
  • Readers Theatre – Reading is abounding around the school and this includes several groups practicing readers theatre. We look forward to some class presentations of these various stories
  • Learning Updates – These were released on Friday. Please ensure you log into MyEd to read your child’s report. Teachers have been busy conducting assessments and these updates contain rich information about your child’s learning. Please reach out to your teacher with any questions.
  • Chess and games club – With the change in weather we have some fun indoor clubs available to students. On Monday and Friday we have a large group of students who are enjoying playing chess (or other games) in the library. On Wednesdays we have craft club which is also well attended. Student council students help with the set up and leadership of these clubs

A few reminders for you:

  1. WEATHER –Please ensure your child has warm outdoor clothes and possibly even a change of clothes in their backpack (or to stay at school).

  2. Volunteering – There are opportunities coming up after the holiday break for volunteering in winter activities. Please ensure you have completed a volunteer application form and Criminal Record Check well in advance. These do take several weeks to process so best to try to get them in before the holidays if you plan on helping out. Here is a link to the volunteer form you can send to Laura at clerical.sne@sd8.bc.ca

Finally, some family learning!

Even in this shoulder season there are still many things you can do outdoors as a family. There are some great areas in the Kootenays to explore! Here are some suggested activities you can do with or with out the snow! Hopefully we will get more snow soon and can then fully engage in winter play.

That’s all for now!

Have a wonderful week!
