Saturday Update - 09Apr22
Good day out there, South Nelson community.
This month's submission for SD8's monthly Superintendent's Report comes from Inclusion Support Teacher, Leanne Douglas.
For the past 2 years, the District has been involved in the Literacy Coherence Initiative at the Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels. Schools have been assessing students using a tool called the Early Literacy Profile (ELP) which pinpoints strengths and stretches in students early literacy skills. Using this information, teachers are able to target instruction to meet the literacy needs of specific students and classes. After looking at recent ELP data, teachers -Ashley Long (BK) and Leanne Douglas (SNES) noticed that there was a need for specific Sight Word games and activities to support students at both these schools. Working together, Ashley and Leanne developed a number of different hands-on Sight Word stations to have students rotate through, and build their sight word knowledge. These stations were a great success with the multiage grade 1-4 classes at BK, and are now being used with grade 1-2 students at SNES. Our hope is to share our ideas and resources with other schools in the district in the future.
