Dear families of South Nelson Elementary,

I trust you had a very restful and fun summer! Welcome to a new school year!

Our office is now open and we are busy getting things ready for students to return next week on Tuesday, September 2.

Here is some information for you prior to the start of school.

First day – Tuesday, September 2

8:15am – Parent coffee social in the courtyard hosted by PAC

8:25am – Morning Bell

11:33am – Dismissal bell (Please note this is an early dismissal day and dismissal will be 3 hours earlier)

At the bell please line up at last year’s line up

The plan for the first day includes:

  • Students will gather with their last year’s class at the bell.
  • They will spend some time with their teacher and classmates from last year
  • We will have an assembly
  • After the assembly students will go to their new classes for the rest of the day

A few notes:

  • New students – Please line up in the courtyard along the fence at the Latimer St. entrance. There will be an orientation in the library at the beginning of the day
  • For this day, students will only need a morning snack. Please do not bring any backpacks, indoor shoes, school supplies, etc. Students will be moving between classrooms so the less they bring the easier transitions will be
  • **No school for Kindergarten students on this day due to gradual entry.
  • Class assignments - We are working on finalizing class lists this week and you should get an email at the end of the week with notification for which class your child will be in. As you may know, there can be a lot of shifts during the month of September while we process enrolments. Once students get settled into classes, there may be a few shifts throughout the month to ensure the best placement for each student and to accommodate for any new enrolments. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Bell Schedule – Here is our regular bell schedule, which will start on Wednesday, September 3.

Starting on Wednesday September 3, you can send your child with non-marking indoor shoes and a personal water bottle, as well as other personal items such as a lunch kit, backpack, and appropriate outdoor clothing.

Enrolment – To help us accurately anticipate how many students are returning to school, please let us know if there has been any change in your situation over the summer. Please contact our office (clerical.sne@sd8.bc.ca)  to let us know if you have moved or will not be returning to South Nelson Elementary School.

A lot goes into start up of school in September! Big thanks and shout outs go to:

  • Our custodians who have worked so hard over the summer to make our school look great when students return.
  • Painters – Come check out the new paint job on the outside of our school. It looks amazing!
  • PAC - Come in and check out our new sensory path in our main hallway thanks to our PAC. They also are planning a great welcome back coffee social for parents on the first day of school
  • Princess Laura – She will be busy this week processing registrations and setting up all the paperwork for the start of a new year
  • Teachers are busy setting up their classrooms, planning and preparing to build new classroom communities

We are all eagerly looking forward to welcoming your children back to school!

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, and I look forward to seeing you all next week!

With warm regards,
