South Nelson Celebrates Remembrance Day
Today the South Nelson school community observed Remembrance Day together. Students, staff, parents, and our school trustee gathered in the gym to learn about Remembrance Day. We learned about the history of Remembrance Day and the importance of the poppy. We learned about Canada’s role in peacekeeping. Finally, we learned about what we can each do as an act of Remembrance.
Students were encouraged to make Remembrance Day meaningful to them. Things they could do include wearing a poppy and attending a service at the cenotaph tomorrow. They could also ask their parents if anyone in their family has served our country. Learning those stories are important to our learning together. They were encouraged to talk to the current service members who are at the service, or cadets who are handing out poppies. Letters and care packages to those currently serving abroad are meaningful ways to show our support and help them know they are not alone. Above all, students were encouraged to be peacemakers on a daily basis in their everyday lives by learning about reconciliation and being vulnerable and courageous in their relationships.
We had some wonderful student presentations. Mrs. Bonikowsky’s class recited “In Flander’s Field”. Mrs. Sparks and Mrs. DeSousa’s classes presented a rendition of “Give Peace a Chance”. They worked together to tailor the song to our code of conduct for a meaningful song for all.
Thank you to all families for supporting your child(ren) learn about this meaningful day.
