Hello Families,

Here we are in our last full week of school for 2023-24! The last day of school is coming so quickly and this week there are so many fun and celebratory things happening.

See below for this week’s update.

Have a great week!

Last week’s highlights include:

  • HUB Learn2 Ride – Kootenay Mountain biking came last week and ran learn to ride bike intensives for our Gr. 3-5 students. Students did some learning in the classroom, and then had a day outside to practice their skills in stations set up around our top field. It was a great day of learning!
  • Search and Rescue –Mrs. C’s class raised almost $300 for the Nelson Search and Rescue. The team came to collect the money and spent an afternoon with the class teaching them all about the different tools and skills they use in their work.
  • Gr. 5 Year End field trip – Our Gr. 5’s had their year end “out” day to celebrate together their time at South Nelson. They went to Castlegar and went bowling and swimming. It was a great day to share in their community before they head off to Trafalgar.
  • Walk for Truth and Reconciliation – Our school participated in the SD8 Reconciliation Walk/Run. Stations were set up along the rail trails above the school and classes were able to do their walks together. There were 9 calls to action from the TRC that teachers stopped with their students and discussed. It was a good opportunity to reflect on the small steps we can each do towards reconciliation. You may have seen them if you were up on the trails last week! We hope you were able to take some time to reflect as well.
  • Popsicles – Ms. Finnie’s class made popsicles for sale on Fridays over the last several weeks. They learned all about good business practices, as well as making healthy snacks. The popsicles were a big hit at lunch time. Thanks for sharing your delicious treats!
  • Math stations – Amidst all the fun times, learning still charged forward! For instance, Mrs. Bonikowsky’s class have been doing math stations which include various ways to manipulate numbers, represent thinking, and solve problems.
  • Trafalgar band came to play for us! What a fun time to hear the great songs the concert band has learned! Our students learned all about the different instruments, and were encouraged to clap and dance along. Thanks, Trafalgar!

A few pieces of information/reminders for you:

  1. Dressing appropriately – There are so many field trips going out. As always, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather and are prepared for the activities of the day.
  2. Extra snacks – With all the activities outdoors and in the community, students are using a lot of energy! Many students are asking for extra snacks throughout the day and have often eaten their lunch by recess. Consider sending along extra food to help fuel your child’s day!
  3. Bus Registration – The deadline has been extended. If you need your child to ride the bus next year, please register at this link: https://www.sd8.bc.ca/node/36719
  4. FUN Day is coming on June 24! Please let Mrs. Snell know if you can help out by running a station. Even a partial day would be helpful.
  5. PAC had their last meeting of the month last week. The minutes have been posted to the PAC page.
