Host an International Student for the Summer

Kathi Knapik, homestay manager for SD8's International Program, is looking for homestay hosts for a summer Japanese program in Nelson. The students have already arrived in Canada, are in grade 11 (~16 years old) and are spread throughout School District 8. They are currently attending school, engaging in Canadian home, school and community life while living in homestays.

Hosting is a wonderful intercultural opportunity for individuals and families! An ideal host provides a caring home environment where students are fed 3 meals/day and snacks (lunch is packed for summer school), included in some family life and adequately supervised. Students can be excused by their summer program teacher to travel with their host (ie. camping). Otherwise, the students are in summer school weekdays, with weekends off.

The seventeen (17) students will all move to Nelson for July and August 2023, for an English Language and Activities Summer Program. We are seeking hosts for 13 students.  * The students will have transit passes and homestays can rely on public transit or walking to get students to/from their 'home base' at a school on Mill Street (*Monday, Aug. 7 will be a holiday with no school).

Move in date(s):  between Friday, June 30 - Sunday, July 2. They start their summer program on Tuesday, July 4th. 9am.

Move out date(s): Thursday, Aug. 30 or Friday, September 1st. Their last day of their summer program is Thursday, August 31st.

Compensation - $1800 (for the duration) per student; tax free

Could host a maximum of three (3) students of the same gender (each requires their own bedroom).

Please contact Kathi soon - by phone 250-505-7015 (w) or email kathi.knapik@sd8.school to discuss further.

Satisfaction Survey

Only 6% of our families have completed the Satisfaction Survey. We really want SNES voices heard. I know, I hate filling out surveys also, but this one does help our school.

To complete the survey:

  • Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
  • Under the section Direct Access – no logon number required select:
    • District: the name of your child’s district
    • School: the name of your child’s school
    • Language: the language of your choice
  • Complete the survey by clicking on the appropriate circle to answer each question.  Move to the next set of questions by clicking on the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on the left arrow to navigate backwards.
  • When you are finished the survey, you will get a message “Thank you for sharing your views”.
  • Once complete, your school will have the results immediately.

Talent Show Auditions – please see attached sheet

We are beginning auditions for the talent show. These auditions accomplish a few things:

  1. For students who might be anxious, it allows them a chance to try to perform in a safe environment, before standing before the entire school and parents.
  2. If students have made a genuine effort to display a talent, they are in the performance. We are doing our best to ensure all students who have worked on their performance will be able to fit into the afternoon.
  3. We are able to provide some suggestions to the student and family about where they might make it stronger, after trying the performance in front of staff.
  4. The intent of auditions is not to eliminate anyone who has made the effort to perform.
  5. We are not able to allow lip synching, as this simply takes too long and we do not have that much available time.
  6. A suggestion would be that students tell a joke, for students who might be nervous, but still want to try.
  7. Attached is the audition form to support planning and auditions. Please have the form to the school by April 21st. Students will audition the week of May 1-5th. They do not need to have it perfect, just to demonstrate that they are working on it.

Recycling Update and News

Thanks to the Gr. 4/5 recycling team and Ms. Ben Rabha for all their work to make

Big congrats to the recycling bin winners from this last round: Ms DeSousa’s class (Gold), Mrs C’s class (Silver), and Mrs Dimopoulos’ class (Bronze).

  • Some tips to keep your recycling bin clean are:
  • You can include all paper including: white, lined, and coloured paper, newspaper, flyers, magazines, catalogues, envelopes, cardboard, and paper bags
  • DO NOT INCLUDE: staples, tape, paper clips, craft supplies, books, paper towel, napkins, tissues, paper with foil, wax or plastic linings, GARBAGE, FOOD, really dirty paper (with food or craft supplies), other types of recycling (like: plastic, wrappers, cans)
  • The most common contaminants that we have found and that you should look out for are: Craft supplies, staples, tape, food wrappers and containers, orange peels, wax paper, paper towels

  • In addition to keeping your classroom recycling bins clean, please help keep all the hallway bins clean. There are labelled round grey bins in the upstairs and downstairs hallways, where you can put mixed paper recycling. It is quite common for garbage to be put in these by mistake, so please be careful to help make sure only mixed paper goes in these bins.

  • Doing a good job with our school mixed paper recycling is important because:

  • It helps keep all this paper out of the land fill and means it can be recycled into more paper or other products. So it saves trees and is good for the environment!
  • If our schools’ recycling has contaminants in it the whole big green school bin must be thrown out, meaning that all the paper goes into the landfill. This is wasteful and bad for the environment!
  • If the schools’ recycling bin has contaminants in it the school is also charged a lot of money, so if we do not keep our recycling clean we will no longer be allowed to recycle any paper. It will all have to go to the landfill which will be very wasteful and bad for the environment.
  • Thank you for helping our school recycle!

Community Opportunities

  1. Mark your calendar – Registration for Mini Med School Kootenays opens Monday, March 27 at 9:00 am.

Good morning,

On behalf of BC Children’s Hospital, I would like to invite you and your grade 10-12 students to attend Mini Med School on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Prestige Lakeside Resort, 701 Lakeside Drive, Nelson.

Mini Med School is a BC Children’s Hospital health science youth outreach program that connects high school students with big ideas, big discoveries and big names in health research. Admission is free but space is limited. Student registration will be available online between Monday, March 27 to Wednesday, April 5, 2023. To keep things fair for all students, participants will be selected based on a lottery draw.

The Mini Med School Kootenays schedule is now available online.

Presented by world-class researchers, clinicians and health professionals, featured activities for the day include:

  • Building blocks of immunity: What do immune cells eat?
  • 'Sneaky Superbugs': How do bacteria acquire antimicrobial resistance?
  • A balancing act: Building your microbiome
  • Journey of stem cells: A game of destinies
  • Recipe for disaster: Cholesterol and cardiovascular collapse

As the health and safety of our participants and faculty are the top priority, all attendees will be required to wear a mask during the event. As Mini Med School is a special event held outside the classroom, students will also be responsible for making their own arrangements to miss a day of classes and for transportation to the venue.

Feel free to distribute the attached poster to your students and colleagues. For more information please visit www.minimedschoolbc.ca.

If you’re interested in learning more about educational outreach opportunities presented by BC Children’s Hospital, we’d encourage you to subscribe to our newsletter.
