Hello Families,

Well, it looks like winter is here! I hope you and your families enjoyed getting outside this weekend and doing some fun activities in the snow. It looks like we have more on the way!

I hope you have all settled into school routine after the break. It was great to see everyone again last week as students and staff re-connected. It’s always wonderful to see so many happy and refreshed faces!

See below for this week’s update.

Last week’s highlights include:

  • Classes spent some time re-connecting and re-establishing classroom community and routines
  • Outdoor Ed! Several of our classes got right into outdoor education and headed outside for learning
  • Gr. 4/5 classes began reading novels for the Reading Link challenge. It was great to see so many of them engaged in books throughout the school
  • Buddy classes were in full swing. Reading, art, and group activities continued
  • Outdoor play at recess and lunch. With the weather being so mild, students continued healthy, imaginative, and collaborative play on the playground

A few pieces of information/reminders for you:

  1. It looks like we will have more snow this week and the weather will be getting very cold at the end of the week. Please ensure your child(ren) dress for the weather with appropriate snow pants and coats, as well as warm toques and gloves.
  2. Forms for winter activities went home last week. Please get your permission forms and payment back as soon as you can. Please let me know if your family needs financial assistance.
  3. Library books – We have some library books that have not yet been returned. Can you please assist your child(ren) to locate their library books and return them to school? Thank you! If you have any questions about which books your child may have signed out, you can contact Miranda Terlingen at miranda.terlingen@sd8.bc.ca
  4. Enrolment for next year – Yes! We are already starting to plan for next year. If you know you will be moving away and your child will not be at South Nelson next, year, please let me know. This will help us anticipate our numbers and begin to build classes.
  5. Kindergarten enrolment – Do you have a kindergarten aged child or know someone who does? Kindergarten enrolment is now open, so please get your registrations in a soon as possible. Spread the word! Again, the earlier we have these registrations in the better, as this helps us plan for next year. You can find registration information at this link: https://southnelson.sd8.bc.ca/registration-transfers

Some upcoming dates (you can also find these posted on our calendar: https://southnelson.sd8.bc.ca/events/calendar)

  1. Jan. 9 – PAC meeting (6:30pm in the library)
  2. Jan. 15 – ProD Day – NO SCHOOL

Family learning resources:

For those of you with young children, perhaps entering Kindergarten in the next year or two, here is a helpful article to begin thinking about supporting their early literacy development. Some good guidelines in it describe things you can do at home to build school readiness:

Also, here are some fun activities you may want to try with your child:

Have a great week,

Mrs. Snell
