SNES News Feb. 10
Hello Families,
Welcome to a new week!
See below for this week’s update.
Last week’s highlights include:
- Whitewater ski days – Huge thanks to Ms. Douglas for organizing our Whitewater ski days for our intermediate classes. The first day was last week and everyone had big smiles on their faces when they returned! They had a day of lessons, skiing, and connecting with each other.
- Gr. 4/5 skating – Our Gr. 4/5 class also went skating at Lion’s park as an additional outdoor adventure this week. They braved the colder weather and had a great time.
- Math puzzles– Susan Milner from the BC Science centre came to visit several of our classes this week and brought some very engaging math puzzles! She got students to think creatively about numbers, as well as space and sequence.
- Environmental studies – Intermediate students have been learning about the main resource industries of BC (Mining, Forestry, Fishing and Agriculture). Last week students explored the advantages and disadvantages of mining, concluding with a 'cookie mining' activity where they used toothpicks and chocolate chip cookies to 'mine' with the least environmental damage to a chosen habitat. Mr. Marsh’s Gr. ¾ class also has also been studying food webs. Small groups have researched a biome and created posters identifying all the creatures and the ways they are connected.
- Reading Link Challenge – Our intermediate students continue to work on their Reading Challenge books! They are working hard to read their books and study for the competition.
- Stuffy Olympics – Big thanks to our student council who planned and supported our stuffy Olympics! Students were excited to bring their sledding contraptions and race them down the hill! There was also ice bowling and target throwing.
- Black History Month – February is Black History Month and classes are engaging in some great learning about Canadian Black figures and their contribution to society. Mrs. Lawrence’s Gr. 2/3 class worked with their Trafalgar buddies on a group collage.
