Thank You!

Thanks to Tanji for coordinating the Purdy’s Fundraiser! If you enjoyed the concerts that happened before Winter and Spring Breaks, this is thanks to PAC and the fundraising that they do. If you want more enhanced opportunities for your children please support the PAC fundraisers and consider getting involved with PAC. It is a great group of caring parents that really do make a HUGE difference in our school. You are welcome to email me directly if you need help getting connected.

Reminders

  • See the hot lunch order flier – PLEASE NOTE – we have decided to keep hot lunches open to the end of the year. WARNING – there are a LOT of events that are currently unplanned, we have no ability to refund lunches or get lunches to students on field trips. We will do our best to get food to students at the end of the day, but is very likely that this is overlooked as students often arrive back as the end of day bell is ringing. You MUST send lunches with your children on field trips. If you are concerned about this, we suggest that you do not order lunches for the month of June, as this is the most unpredictable time.
  • Talent Show May 31 – we will be holding auditions for students at the end of April/beginning May. This is to show case the diverse talents of our school students. Please note that due to time constraints, students cannot lip sync and should only be in one performance. We want to make sure we have time for all our tiny talented kids!

  • As spring has arrived, and students want to spend more time outside together, it is important for us as the school and parents to remind students about the after school “play date”.

  1. We do not allow students to use the phone during the day to make play dates. We have found that this only leads to confusion about where students are suppose to go, and it ties up our phone lines for students who need it for urgent communication. We remind families that they should make those arrangements the night before, and send communication to the school by email to the teacher or written note.
  2. We will be going over with all students that they must follow the plan has been discussed with parent that morning to either get picked up, take the bus, or walk home. If they are unsure of the plan they can call home at any time of the day using our phone in the classroom or asking Laura to use the office phone, but not to use this time to make changes to the plan.
  3. If a parent is late to pick them up they have 3 different options
    1.  Come back in the school and ask secretary Laura to call home,
    2. Come find the teacher in the classroom,
    3. Talk to a school supervisor who is outside.
  • Thank you to the parents for not stopping in the bus stop zone, even for just a second. We have 6 buses arriving to the school and they are on a schedule with other schools. Having to wait, even “for a second” makes problems down the bus line.

Satisfaction Survey

If you have not completed this survey, SNES and the SD8 would appreciate your thoughts. It will close the end of April.

 To complete the survey:

  • Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
  • Under the section Direct Access – no logon number required select:
    • District: the name of your child’s district
    • School: the name of your child’s school
    • Language: the language of your choice
  • Complete the survey by clicking on the appropriate circle to answer each question.  Move to the next set of questions by clicking on the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on the left arrow to navigate backwards.
  • When you are finished the survey, you will get a message “Thank you for sharing your views”.
  • Once complete, your school will have the results immediately.

Community Connections

One of the Nelson Tennis Club’s important goals is inclusivity and equal opportunity to enjoy our fun sports. This season, with the support of the Nelson Lions Club and the Nelson District Credit Union, NTC is piloting a bursary program to subsidize individuals and families that are keen to play but inhibited in doing so by financial hardship. Please take a moment to think of someone that would benefit and refer them to www.nelsontennisclub.com to complete a brief and confidential on-line application. Tennis membership and PB season pass subsidies are limited in number and issued on a first-come basis, so folks are encouraged to act promptly.

Thanks for helping make our facility an even better place,

Keith Bridger, President

Nelson Tennis Club

LET’S GO ECO

Our assembly is no cost to your school or teachers and simple to sign up and implement. Find out how we will benefit your school this Earth Week by checking out www.LetsGoEco.live.

My Mission And Start:

I was inspired into environmental action by my high school AP Environmental Science teacher, Mr. Mirigian. After performing for hundreds of thousands of students, I have been honored to inspire and educate youth around the world!

One quote from a student showcasing that lasting impact is below:

“You visited my elementary school called Harloe. I’m now a freshmen at a high school call New Tech. I need to give you a lot of credit for how you changed me. Before, I was your average, run of the mill kid crazed about video games. Now I’m part of a student council encouraging community service and aspiring to become a law enforcement ranger of the National Park Service. It wasn’t all you that turned me out to be like this, but you certainly hit the on switch. I have major respect for your work and hope you can spread this knowledge to young students everywhere." - The Cook Via YouTube
Some Benefits of Let’s Go Eco:
- Shows are no-cost to your schools or teachers as they are being sponsored by our in person assembly business, The EcoHero Show.

- Brings your whole school district together with schools from around the globe for a fun, memorable, global, community experience.

- Empowers students to be EcoHeroes for the planet, leading to a positive impact on your school culture.

- Employs a variety of modalities to engage all students: music, movement, videos, storytelling, and interactive trivia questions.

- Contains optional follow-up curriculum to extend and deepen learning.

- Has GREAT music - I am a GRAMMY voting member and balloted artist.

- Students take the learning home through videos performed during the show, which have 2.9 Million+ YouTube views.

YOUTH WILDERNESS PROGRAM

My name is Tanin Shunter and I am the founder of Kootenay Rites Of Passage - Coming of Age and Wilderness Programs for Youth. My dad (Murray Shunter) was a teacher within SD8 for many years and it was recommended that I reach out to you regarding some upcoming nature programs Kootenay ROP is offering.

Because this is a new organization (launched as of Jan.1st this year through Community Futures) I am looking for help in spreading the word in our community.
I wonder if you'd be willing to share my upcoming programs/website in the SD8 mailing list or perhaps have some tips of how I may best get our services in front of parents who would love to see their boys spending less time on screens and more time connecting with nature?

I've included posters for our upcoming Spring programs below along with the basic details - please let me know if you have any questions and thanks so much for having a look and getting back to me when you are able to.

Warm regards
Tanin
