Black Excellence Day
Last week we celebrated Black Excellence Day at South Nelson Elementary School. Each class participated in activities that were age appropriate and relevant to them to acknowledge this day.
Mrs. Bonikowsky’s Gr. ¾ class focused on a story called “Hidden Figures”. It is about four black women who overcame barriers and made a significant contribution to NASA as mathematicians and engineers. If you want to share the story together with your family, you can enjoy the read aloud here.
Intermediate classes participated in a virtual Black Excellence presentation. They heard stories about Canadian black history and resilience and had discussions about what Black Excellence means to them Mrs. DeSousa’s class began working on a biography project to enhance a deeper knowledge about Black Canadians of the past and today. They will continue this learning into next week with Martin Luther King day ahead.
