February is Kindness Month – We are collecting those Random Acts of Kindness that happen in our school. If your child shares a kind act or practices a kind act, we want them to add it to our large red heart outside the office.

A huge thank you to Ms. Spark’s Gr. ¾ class for beginning the spring garbage clean up! They collected 8 bags off our playground this week. We have added this to our Random Acts of Kindness heart.

With spring on the way, we are already seeing muddy wet playground conditions. Extra clothes are a must, please send them in a Ziplock bag so we can place the wet clothes back in the Ziplock bag for the return trip home.

Thank you to the parents who have altered their student pick up parking to ensure our school bus zone remains open. It is definitely better this week!

Trauma-Focused Parenting

Children develop a secure attachment with us by feeling seen, safe and soothed.

As an adult it is often much easier to accept our child’s experience when it aligns with our own inner experience. It makes sense to us why they feel sad, angry, or frustrated about something.

This is more difficult to do when it contrasts our own.

For kids who have a history of complex trauma they often have much bigger reactions and emotional responses, which can be confusing and exhausting. Their response doesn’t always match the situation or the incident in our eyes.

One of the more effective ways we can teach our kids to move through their emotional experience and to make sense of them is by explicitly accepting their inner experience.

Renae breaks all this down and more in this week's episode and provides a sample script of what you CAN say.

Schools Receive Funds for Food from Nelson Firefighters

Four elementary schools in School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) have received a combined $1300 toward food for students and families thanks to fundraising efforts by the Nelson Professional Firefighters Association Local 1343.

In December 2022, Nelson firefighters held a fundraiser to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada and for children and families at local schools who need assistance with food and meals. Firefighters raised a total of $1300 for food equity, providing $325 each to Hume Elementary, South Nelson Elementary, Wildflower Nelson and Rosemont Elementary in the Nelson Family of Schools.

“The Nelson Professional Firefighters like to help different groups within the City of Nelson. With my kids now in kindergarten, I had heard stories about the need for money through schools to support families and children who can’t afford food. We brought this need to the attention of our association as a worthy cause to support, and they went for it. We’re just trying to help out where we can,” said Nelson Firefighter Chris Thast, who initiated the fundraiser.

“The cost of living is always going up and there are a lot more families now struggling to pay for food. There’s an ongoing need to support families who can’t pay for hot lunches, for snacks and for groceries. We’re really thankful to the Nelson Professional Firefighters for this donation which will go toward improving food equity in each of our schools,” said South Nelson Elementary Principal Jann Schmidt.

Also present to receive a $325 donation were Hume Elementary Principal Sacha Kalabis, Wildflower School Principal Misty Terpstra and Rosemont Elementary Principal Lindsay Mackay.

The money each school received will help pay for snacks for students during the school day, for programs that provide groceries to families in need and other food equity programs with the goal of seeing children well nourished and ready to learn each day.

Sincerely,

Jann Schmidt
