Hello Families,

We have finished a week of auditions! How talented are our students. I am very proud of the bravery of the student who tried out for the talent show that will take place on May 31st. I would also like to celebrate the students who have taken on the task of the Tuesday Announcements.

Upcoming Week

Tuesday, May 9 -

Wednesday, May 10 -

Thursday, May 11 -

Friday, May 12 – last day of swimming for Gr. 2s.

Ill Students

There are a couple of viruses that are hitting SNES community hard. If your child is not well in the morning, please do not send them to school. This helps keep other students and staff well.

PAC News

Thank you so much for participating in the Georama Plant Sale Fundraiser for South Nelson. The plants you ordered will be available for pick up in the room just inside the sunflower doors at the following times:

  • Tuesday May 9th before school (8:20-8:40 am),
  • Tuesday May 9th after school (2:15-2:40 pm),
  • Wednesday May 10th before school (8:20-8:40 am) and
  • Wednesday afternoon (2:15-2:40 pm).

If those times do not work for you, please let the school know and we will work out another option!

Let us Know

We have begun planning for next year. Although we are not at the class composition level, we are looking at numbers. If your child(ren) are not going to be here next year please let the school know (not the Gr. 5sm ?).

As well, in June, we will be sending out a form for parents to tell us about their child’s unique learning needs. It is not about selecting a teacher, as this decision is the responsibility of school staff, but we will be asking about what your see your child’s strengths or needs are. We ask you to think about this now, but the forms will come out next month. Please wait until then to provide this information, I do not want it lost in the month before the end of the year.

We Need a Donation…

If you have small ice packs (lunch box size) that you are not using, we would happily take them as ice packs for when students are hurt. We do use small frozen sponges, but we have lost them all of them from the freezer and there are not any in the store in Nelson also, at the moment. I know that there are often small ice packs that come with lunch boxes that may not be used. We would definitely use them!

District Information

I feel like we are in the calm before the end of year storm. Please keep up with news from your student’s classroom teacher.

FOR YOUR COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD!

(Please post these flyers and information to your community bulletin boards!)

My name is Ellie Hedges, and I have been a local piano teacher in our community for the past 20 years. This past year, I have opened up a music and art school called Nelson Studio 88 above the legion.

I would be very grateful if you could share our spring term offerings with our community of schools to help parents know what we offer for their kiddos in the arts.  We are also hosting an adult open house event this Friday, and I would love to invite you and all your teachers, too, if they are inclined and have time! Thanks so much for your time, and let me know if you have any questions

Musically yours,

Ellie Hedges

MENTAL HEALTH

Join our free webinar on Friday, May 12 at 10 a.m. PDT to learn about blocked trust, blocked care, and how to effectively move through these stages.

Below are common questions our team is asked by those who are raising, caring for, or teaching children who have endured complex trauma:

  • How do I help my child who doesn't trust me?
  • How do I connect with a student who clearly doesn't want a relationship with me?
  • What do I do if I feel burned out, jaded, or hopeless about the future?
  • I feel like giving up, but I don’t want to. What should I do?
  • And the one concern that is rarely talked about: What do I do, if I don't like my kid [or student] anymore?

These are difficult but very real and important questions that need to be addressed when talking about healing from complex trauma.

The reality is that what was hurt in a relationship needs to be healed in a relationship. But how do you do that if you are burned out or feellike giving up?

I am pleased to announce that in our next webinar, Renae Regehr, RCC, Complex Trauma Resources clinician, CCI coach, and mother of four (adopted and biological) children will be diving into these questions.

Advanced registration is required as space is limited, so save your spot: https://complextrauma-ca.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_g1Vb3SkWS-i5I0hwwfHcwQ

If you know someone who could benefit from this free training please forward this email to them. We want to help others feel equipped to support the children and youth in their lives.

Working together with you,

– Chuck
