SNES News - May 22 - 26

Image

Hello Families,

We are grateful for the sun, and thanks to all the parents who have sent students with hats for our lunch break. We do have great areas for shade, but students seem to love to continue to play in the sun. Please continue to send students prepared for the sun and heat.

We have been talking a lot with students about how to keep a growth mindset and activities that help maintain our happiness! There is some great resources for families. We know that happiness and mental health is something we all need to learn to maintain. A growth mindset is key for students to be constructively reflective after situations.

WALKING TOGETHER: (RE)CONNECTING TO NATURE THROUGH TWO-EYED SEEING  With Authors, Elder Albert D. Marshall and Louise Zimanyi

Elder Albert D. Marshall is an Honorary Doctor of Letters and Mi’kmaw Spiritual Leader from the Moose Clan of the Mi’kmaq Nation in Eskasoni, Unama’ki (Cape Breton, Nova Scotia). He has been working to advance the concept of Two-Eyed Seeing and is a respected and influential environmental voice in Unama’ki.

Louise Zimanyi, who is of French-Canadian and Hungarian descent, lives as a guest in Tkaronto/Toronto, Treaty 13 territory.  As a professor and researcher, she is co-learning from and with the Land and wise teachers, co-transforming early childhood pedagogy and practice. They co-wrote ‘Walking Together”, an innovative picture book that introduces readers to the concept of Etuaptmumk – or Two-Eyed Seeing, the gift of multiple perspectives in the Mi’kmaw language – as it follows a group of young children connecting to nature as their teacher.

Elder Albert and Louise will read from and talk about the book, Walking Together, sharing how braiding the strengths of Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives together can inspire everyone to nurture respectful, reciprocal, responsible relationships with the Land and Water, plant-life, animals and other-than-human beings for the benefit of all.

EASE at Home (Everyday Anxiety Strategies)

It can be hard for adults to know what to say or do to ease a child’s worries, especially during times of change and uncertainty. As the most important big people in their world, parents and caregivers can help children feel safer and soften the sharp edges of whatever is making their worries grow.

FOR INFORMATION

Request from the Canadian Pediatric Endocrine Group: Seeking District Partner for Grant Opportunity to Develop Educator Resources for Early Diabetes Identification

The Canadian Pediatric Endocrine Group (CPEG) is looking for school district partners to co-apply for a grant from Diabetes Canada to develop a prototype module for K-12 educators focused on early identification of diabetes symptoms. The intention is to develop a short-form module (e.g., a 5-minute video) as well as supporting materials.  This initiative aims to reduce the number of children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition that can be prevented if diabetes symptoms (increased urination and drinking) are recognized early. The rate of DKA at the time of diagnosis has increased since the start of the pandemic. Expressions of interest should be made by the end of May. For more information, please contact:
