Math Mania hits South Nelson!

Image

Math Mania hit the students, staff and families of South Nelson last week. Parents,  grandparents and caregivers headed into classrooms to solve puzzles, logic conundrums and math problems. Everyone discovered that math is fun and can be shared with everyone in various ways. Students enjoyed being the "teacher" and showing what they know about numbers, shapes and logic.

Some classes had a games walk, where students could lead their families through a series of games around the room. Others had a collection of puzzles that students could choose from. There were portfolios for parents to look through and student lead conferences. It was a wonderful time for students to show and celebrate their learning.

Susan Milner from Science World has been working with our school for some time to prepare. She visited many classrooms, challenged student thinking and encouraged everyone to think differently about math. She attended our event and highlighted some commercial games families can play at home that make math fun and accessible to everyone.

Big thanks to our teachers for all their work in preparation, and to all the visitors we had who came to play and explore math together!
